We use ‘used to’ to talk about things that happened in the past – actions or states – that no longer happen now.

  • She used to play tennis when she was younger. [She no longer plays tennis]
  • I used to eat meat, but I became a vegetarian 5 years ago. [ He doesn’t eat meat at all now]

The negative is ‘didn’t use to

e.g. I didn’t use to like burgers, but now I do.

Questions are formed with ‘Did you use to …?’

e.g. Did you use to live in Dubai?
