‘Used to’ to show past habits

We use ‘used to’ to talk about things that happened in the past – actions or states – that no longer happen now.
- She used to play tennis when she was younger. [She no longer plays tennis]
- I used to eat meat, but I became a vegetarian 5 years ago. [ He doesn’t eat meat at all now]
The negative is ‘didn’t use to’
e.g. I didn’t use to like burgers, but now I do.
Questions are formed with ‘Did you use to …?’
e.g. Did you use to live in Dubai?


Remember: ‘used to’ means something happened / happened regularly in the past but no longer happens.
